These questions are designed to give our readers a better understanding of the people behind the names on the ballot. Below, get to know Cruz Samano, who is running for election to the Campbell County School District Board of Trustees:

Hello, my name is Cruz Samano. I work in construction. I’m from Lake Stevens, Washington. I moved to Douglas, Wyoming, in 2016. I moved to Gillette about two years ago. I chose to run for the school board to get my name out there because I plan on running for HD-3 in the next election.
2. What prompted your decision to run for school board? What do you have to offer the community as a board member? What do you believe your role is as a board member?
What prompted me is that I’ve been seeing a lot of things happening in school boards throughout the county, and I do not want this to indoctrinate our children into corruption. What I offer to the community as a board member is that I’m gonna push for education, not indoctrination. Teachers need to teach and educate students.
I believe my role is to let people know what is going on in schools and let parents know what their thoughts are about these problems
3. How do you propose Campbell County School District attract and retain quality
educators and other staff, given employee shortages? How can board members
help provide an environment in which employees can thrive?
I do believe teachers are underpaid, but teachers need to teach, not indoctrinate children. I know how expensive school supplies can be and how teachers have to pay out of pocket for the things they need. I think as a community we need to address these problems and figure out a solution. We need an environment where we can thrive and grow as a community.
4. What does a successful school district look like?
Well-paid teachers. Figure out what budget cuts actually need to be cut and focus on not spending so much on sports.
5. What does the school district administration do well?
With everything I hear and see, it’s poorly. It’s hard to find the right spots and address these issues.
6. How has education impacted your life?
It helped me with trade classes to get a diploma and learn the basic skills and hands-on work.
7. What advice would you offer parents of school-aged children to empower
students in their learning?
The whole country has gone digital with technology and we need to encourage useful skills in life taught in schools. We need more hands-on skills to thrive in life. Kids shouldn’t be behind a screen. We need to teach children life skills.
8. What lessons did our school district community learn from the COVID-19
pandemic? How will you help the school district’s efforts to recover the academic
losses associated with the pandemic?
In the future, if possible we need to figure out a solution where they can be monitored instead of Googling the answers. I don’t know how we recover from a lost year, but the only thing we can do is help children that fell behind in school.
9. Should the school board promote more community involvement? If so, how? If
not, why not?
I think the community should definitely be more involved. If it’s more parent-teacher conferences, more student board meetings…We need to work together and come up with a solution to better ourselves in a community. As a parent, I’d like to know if my children are doing well and mentally and physically in school.
10. Is there anything else voters should know about you and your perspective?
I want what’s best for our children and I want to stop government propaganda and overreach. Children are there to learn, not to be indoctrinated.
